It’s imperative to have a full understanding of the criminal process in Pasadena when you’re facing a criminal charge, regardless of its severity.  The Pasadena Courthouse handles all cases from Pasadena, Glendale, Alhambra, Burbank and Altadena, as well as arrests made by the California Highway Patrol.

The degree of the crime determines which prosecuting agency will handle your case.  Felonies are handled by the Los Angeles District Attorneys office.  Misdemeanors that occurred within Pasadena’s city limits will be handled by the Pasadena City Attorney’s Office and and any misdemeanor that occurred in the Pasadena area but not within the city limits will be handled by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.  It’s important to note that any arrest that occurred in Pasadena will be handled in the Pasadena Courthouse and will not be transferred to another court.

The Pasadena Courthouse also handles cases filed by the Monrovia Police Department, Arcadia Police Department and the Sierra Madre Police Department.

Once you’ve been arrested and booked the next step will be your first court appearance, arraignment.  Your arraignment can be in as little as 48-hours if you’re facing felony charges, or as much as 3-weeks if you’re facing misdemeanor charges.  During arraignment you will be informed of the charges against with and you will then be asked to enter a plea of either: guilty, not guilty, or no contest.  During arraignment the judge will determine the specifics of your bail, or grant you permission to leave on your own recognizance.

Following arraignment you will need to appear for your second court appearance, Pretrial Conference.    During this appearance your criminal defense lawyer will discuss the details of your case with the district attorney in an attempt to resolve the issue without going to trial.  If a deal can be struck then your sentencing will commence, on the other hand, if the two sides cannot come to a deal then your case will go to trial.
